Growlers Urge Fans to Throw Underwear on Home Ice

ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland Growlers have quickly become one of the top teams in the ECHL. On a hot winning streak of five games, the Growlers have dominated the North Division. Going 8-1-0-1 in their past 10, their Valentine’s date at Mile One Center with the Maine Mariners will be anything but a love affair.
Going for an ECHL record, the Growlers haven’t lost at home in 18 games, dating back to mid-October. If the Growlers reach 19 straight home wins, they’ll surpass the previous record set by the 1994-95 South Carolina Stingrays.
In conjunction with their recent winning streak, Newfoundland has one odd request: throw underwear on the ice during the intermission. Sure, things like teddy bears are more often than not thrown on the ice, but this petition for undergarments it’s all in the name of a good cause.

In support of local homeless shelter The Gathering Place, the Growlers are bringing a little love to some who need it the most. But as the Executive Director of The Gathering Place Joanne Thompson told Growlers media, it’s needed now more than ever:

“This winter has been especially hard on those who depend upon The Gathering Place on a daily basis. It is through the continued kindness of our community that we are able to help those who need so much.”

Newfoundland Growlers owner also publicly stated his support for the next initiative.

“We want our team’s success to also be our community’s success,” said Growlers Owner Dean MacDonald. “We need Growlers Nation to rally together and support the clients of The Gathering Place just as they would support our players on the ice.”

Through the 18 games, the Growlers have scored 86 games while on The Rock, with an additional 11 games scoring five goals or more.
Friday’s game against the Maine Mariners starts at 7:00 pm NST and will be live on ECHL TV.
