MACON, Ga. – Roughly two months before the start of the SPHL season, the Macon Mayhem are one of three teams in the league in search of a head coach following the parting of ways last week with head coach Zac Desjardins.
The process to find a fifth different head coach is underway. In an exclusive interview with Field Pass Hockey on Wednesday, new general manager Anna Marie Summers confirmed to Field Pass Hockey that the process of hiring the next Mayhem head coach is underway, with the list of finalists narrowed down to three with the second round of interviews underway.
“That’s where we are right now,” Summers said.
The new Mayhem coach will be tasked with turning around the fortunes of a team that missed the postseason for the first time in franchise history last year.
Prior to Desjardins’ one-year stint with the team, Macon was led by Kevin Kerr in the 2020-21 season before departing last June, citing ‘personal and family reasons.’
Since the end of Kerr’s first stint with Macon at the end of 2018, Leo Thomas, Ryan Michel, and Desjardins have manned the head coach slot for Macon.
Now, Macon is looking for the right fit as it moves forward.
“We’re looking for someone who can put a quality product on the ice, but also create a culture that makes players want to be here and also have them want to come back and play here,” Summers said. “If you have a good culture downstairs, the product on the ice will come.”
