MACON, Ga – The Macon Trax took to the ice at the Macon Coliseum for the first time since 2005 on April 1, 2023. This wasn’t an April fools joke either. Back in black, the Mayhem payed homage to the original SPHL team in Macon. A fitting tribute since Macon’s head coach Nick Niedert played for the Trax early in his professional career. This night was special for me as well since the Macon Trax was the team that got me hooked on the sport of hockey.
Unfortunately for Macon, the hype was short lived as the Birmingham Bulls found their stride early in the game. After scoring the first goal within the opening minutes, the Bulls did not let up. They went on to tally eight goals while Macon fought off injuries and fatigue from the previous night. The Trax were able to net two goals which allowed fans to relive the throwback goal song. The Birmingham Bulls won with a final score of 8 to 2.
