ROANOKE, Va– Game 4 of the SPHL President’s Cup Finals will be a game to remember in the Roanoke Valley. With an overtime win of 2-1, the Dawgs clinched the championship for the first time in franchise history.
The game was scoreless through the first period, with the Dawgs outshooting the Bulls 10-2, as they struggled to get the puck past Birmingham goalie Hayden Stewart.
In the second period, Roanoke’s Josh Nenadal slammed the puck in, barely tipping the blocker of Stewart as it hit the back of the net. That score of 1-0 held till the end of the second period.
The noise level kept rising in the Berglund Center as each second ticked by in the third period. With 10.1 seconds left in the game, Birmingham’s Carson Rose tipped in a shot from teammate Jordan Martin, sending the game into overtime for the second night in a row.
The Dawgs looked determined as they took the ice after intermission. It was Dawgs captain Mac Jansen who got the winning goal in less than three minutes. He was assisted by Billy Vizzo and Stephen Alvo. It was his only goal in the playoffs, but it was the one that mattered the most. Congratulations to the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs!
