ROANOKE, Va – The Knoxville Ice Bears visited the Berglund Center for a three game back-to-back series with the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs.
The series ended with Roanoke notching two wins. Knoxville won Thursday night, 4-1, while Roanoke took the win Friday, 4-3, and Saturday, 5-4.
The big news of the weekend, was the bench-clearing brawl Friday night, towards the end of the first period. Roanoke’s Spencer Kennedy and Knoxville’s Rex Moe made contact, as they were getting ready to clear the ice for their shift. Moments later, Moe was in the Roanoke bench, going after Kennedy. The resulting brawl cleared the Knoxville bench, and resulted in six game misconducts and penalties. The league handed out suspensions as well. This resulted in Roanoke calling on retired Dawgs and Roanoke residents, Travis Armstrong and Vojtěch Žemlička to help out the short handed team. Their return bolstered an already projected strong attendance for Saturday’s “Superhero” night. A record attendance of over 7000 were present, as Roanoke closed out the weekend with a win.
