ROANOKE, Va – With the regular season coming to an end, every point counts with home-ice advantage on the line for the playoff-bound Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs. The Macon Mayhem did their best to ruin those plans Thursday night, but a 6-5 win for the Dawgs was the icing on the cake on a record night. Roanoke captain Mac Jansen played his 179th game, setting a new franchise record.
It was a sluggish start for the Dawgs, and the Mayhem took full advantage of it, scoring their first two goals 70 seconds apart in the first period. Macon’s second-period goal prompted a change in the Roanoke net, as Brody Claeys came in for starter Austyn Roudebush. The Dawgs got on the board when Jordan Xavier fed a pass to Gehrett Sargis for a goal, making the score 3-1. This brought momentum for the Dawgs, as the third period saw a fantastic comeback. The Dawgs made four goals in the third period. Macon’s two other goals sent the game into overtime with a 5-5 score.
After a scoreless OT, a shootout was needed. By the time each team had gone through their five shootout players, Roanoke’s Jordan Xavier was the only one to score, winning the game for the Dawgs.
