HENDERSON, Nev – The Vegas Golden Knights faced off against the San Jose Sharks in their game 2 of the 2023 NHL Rookie Faceoff, dropping the game 5-1.
The NHL Rookie Faceoff is an annual tournament showcasing teams’ top prospects and providing a spotlight for players who could potentially suit up in the major leagues. A number of these players will start their season playing in the AHL.
Thomas Bordeleau (2020 SJS 2nd rd., 38th pick) lit the lamp twice for the Sharks, scoring the first two goals of the game.
Kasper Halttunen (SJS 2023 2nd rd., 36th pick) extended the Sharks lead to three goals late in the second period, deflecting the puck off a Vegas defender.
The third period saw goals from Ethan Cardwell (SJS 2021 4th rd., 121st pick) and Ozzy Wiesblatt (SJS 2020 1st rd., 31st pick), which put the Sharks up five goals to none.
Sharks’ goaltender Magnus Chrona (TBL 2018 5th rd., 152nd pick) carried the shutout deep into the third period, though it was shut down by a goal off the stick of Mason Primeau (VGK 2019 5th rd., 141st pick).
