Jacksonville, Fla – Sunday afternoon the Jacksonville Icemen continued their five-game winning streak, defeating the visiting South Carolina Stingrays 5-2. The Icemen wore their Sunday Publix Family Funday-themed jerseys for the first time this season.
Minutes into the game, Jacksonville thought they had scored when the red light briefly came on. The puck rolled along the goal line in front of the net, but after video review it was determined to be a no-goal. Jacksonville continued their momentum with the Stingrays’ netminder Ryan Bednard stopping multiple scoring opportunities. At just past the nine minute mark, Pavel Vorobei was the first to score seconds after their power play ended, putting the Icemen up 1-0. Less than two minutes later on another man advantage, Jake Elmer would make it a two-goal game.
Lawton Courtnall put the Stingrays on the board less than eight minutes into the second period to make it a one-goal game. The Icemen’s Abbott Girduckis scored with eight seconds left in the second period on a late power play opportunity, putting the Icemen up 3-1.
The third period saw Jake Elmer for the Icemen and Lawton Courtnall for the Stingrays both score their second goals of the game. An empty net goal by Derek Lodemeier sealed the deal for the Icemen in the first of a seven-game home stretch for the team.
The win keeps Jacksonville at the top of the South Division and the Eastern Conference.
