Reign Get it Done in the Shootout

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – It took bonus hockey and a skills competition, but the Reign came away with two points last night against Bakersfield, getting back on track after two tough losses against Abbotsford earlier this week.

With the suspension of Brendan Lemieux (PSA: Don’t bite people, kids), Vladimir Tkachev was at the top of my list for potential names to be called up to fill the hole for Los Angeles, but Reign fans should be glad to keep him around, based on how he opened the scoring against Bakersfield. It was a scoreless first period, both goalies playing well, before Tkachev scored a power play goal to make it 1-0. Ontario now has the league’s second best power play with 24.4%, beneath only Rochester. Also of note, recent waiver pick-up (or re-pick-up, technically) Christian Wolanin got the primary assist on Tkachev’s tally in his first game back with the Reign.

Tyler Madden would score the game’s next goal at 4:30 of the third period, making it 2-0, but two quick goals from Seth Griffith (on the power play) and Luke Esposito meant the Reign had to head into overtime. The penalty kill continues to struggle, allowing a power play goal on three attempts from Bakersfield. On a more positive note, there were only three power play opportunities from Bakersfield, plus an offsetting minor in the third period. This was a much more disciplined outing for the Reign, which can only be a good thing, as the best way to kill a penalty is to not take them in the first place.

Gabriel Vilardi scored the only post-regulation goal in the shootout, and the Reign improved to 12-4-0-1. They have only lost one game in overtime this season, against Abbotsford.

In other roster news, Jaret Anderson-Dolan and TJ Tynan were called up to Los Angeles before the game, presumably to fill in some gaps at forward for LA with the Lemieux suspension and the Blake Lizotte injury, and though Wolanin returned this weekend, the Kings put Kale Clague on waivers and he is now a member of the Montreal Canadiens.

COMING UP

The Reign are back at it against Bakersfield on Wednesday night, before returning home to play San Diego on Saturday (December 11) and then taking a short trip down the coast to play the Gulls in San Diego on next Sunday.
