LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have announced that they will not be renewing the contract of Ontario Reign Head Coach Mike Stothers.
In 2014-15, Stothers won the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award, which is awarded to the most outstanding coach and is voted upon by AHL broadcasters and writers.
Stothers had spent the six seasons with the Kings organization, serving as AHL Head Coach for the Manchester Monarchs and Ontario Reign. In 2014-15, he and the Monarchs won the AHL’s Calder Cup, defeating the Utica Comets in five games in the championship series.
Before Manchester, Coach Stothers spent time as Head Coach of the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL) and as an assistant coach for the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers in 2010-11. Additionally, Stothers served as an Assistant Coach for the Philadelphia Flyers from 2000-2002.
During the shortened 2019-20 season, Stothers’ Reign drew a 29-22-6 record, pushing them out of a hypothetical playoff spot.
“We appreciate everything Mike has contributed to the organization,” Kings general manager Rob Blake said in the team’s statement. “He has played an important role in helping develop our players, and we want to thank him for his years of service and guiding us to a Calder Cup Championship in 2015.”
Some of his former players came to the media this morning, expressing gratitude for their former coach.
“He’s probably one of my favorite coaches I’ve ever had. He‘s hard on you, but at the end of the day, he really cares about his players. That’s what rubs off.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, all other coach staff will remain in place.
An announcement on the new head coach is expected to come sometime this summer. The Sin Bin will have the latest on the situation as it becomes available.
