Welcome to Syracuse Speaks, a podcast for The Sin Bin!
Now in its third season, Syracuse Speaks aims to cover the Syracuse Crunch, its organization, and the AHL from the stands. Host Alexandra Ackerman has been covering Syracuse on the internet since 2008, and aims to share her passion for the team and the league with her listeners.
In this episode, recorded October 20th/21st, 2020, Alex starts off by recounting the Lightning organization’s free agency so far, including:
- What’s going on with the Lightning’s RFA: Ross Colton, Ben Thomas, Mitchell Stephens, Gemel Smith, Alex Volkov, Dominik Masin, and Mathieu Joseph
- The AHL/ECHL goalie roster: Newly-signed Chris Gibson, returnee Spencer Martin, and ECHL’er Clint Windsor
- “The New Cameron Gaunce”: Defenseman Andreas Borgman
She then goes into the continuation of her Jersey Series. This time, she delves into the fan she used to be back when she first started watching the Crunch by discussing Jeff Szwez. Szwez, a forward who was a bit of a fighter in his days with Syracuse, was the name on the back of the very first game worn jersey Alex was able to collect.
The jersey was a gift from her friends, and is something she values greatly still to this day. However, her memories of Szwez – and other fighters who have made their way through Syracuse throughout the years – conflict with the fan she is now, a fan who struggles with the physical and mental cost hockey enforcers pay to entertain their fans.
