Syracuse Speaks Podcast Episode #78: Prepping for the Season with Geo FitzGerald!

Welcome to Syracuse Speaks, a podcast for Field Pass Hockey!

Now in its fifth season, Syracuse Speaks aims to cover the Syracuse Crunch, its organization, and the AHL from the stands. Host Alexandra Ackerman has been covering Syracuse on the internet since 2008, and desires to share her passion for the team and the league with her listeners.

In this episode, recorded on September 11th, 2022, Alex welcomes Raw Charge contributor Geo FitzGerald to the podcast. Raw Charge is a SB Nation blog that covers the Tampa Bay Lightning organization, and Geo has been writing for them for many years, specializing in the organization’s prospects and players. With training camps approaching rapidly, Alex engages Geo in an in-depth conversation about how the 2022-23 edition of the Crunch is shaping up.

After some reminiscing together, the two begin by discussing goaltending – always a hot topic going into the season – with a specific focus on Max Lagace and his health. They then move into the team’s defense, a core group Raw Charge recently labeled as “intriguing.” The two discuss that label and everything it implies, with a focus on left-handed defensemen Trevor Carrick, Sean Day, and Ryan Jones, and right-handed blue liners Nick Perbix and Jack Thompson.  Geo also speculates that Syracuse will eventually see Haydn Fleury, a move that could bolster the team mid-season. Unable to resist, Alex also engages Geo in a conversation about some of the team’s veterans like captain Gabriel Dumont, and forwards P.C. Labrie and Daniel Walcott (two players who recently made an impression in the culinary world at the New York State Fair). Then Alex taps into Geo’s extensive knowledge of the prospects at forward in the system with a rapid-fire round featuring conversations about Gabriel Fortier, Gage Goncalves, Lucas Edmonds, and Ilya Usau.
