The Holy GrAHL Podcast Episode 30: Surprises and Upsets

If anything is consistent when it comes to playoff hockey, it’s that there are always upsets and surprises. The 2022 Calder Cup Playoffs are no different.

On the 30th episode of The Holy GrAHL, hosts Andrew Rinaldi and Deana Weinheimer take a quick look back on the playoff action so far while also previewing each divisional semifinals matchup.

First, they get caught up on the latest round of AHL regular-season award winners. This week, it’s the Stockton Heat’s time to shine as Dustin Wolf and Mitch Love take home individual awards. Also getting nods this past week were T.J. Tynan and Jordan Gross.

Then, Field Pass Hockey’s resident Hershey Bears expert, Corey Swartz, joins to talk about the Bears’ locker room cleanup day, Dylan McIlrath’s thoughts on the season, and what may be next for captain Matt Moulson’s long and storied career.

After that, the trio turns their eyes to the second round of the 2022 AHL Playoffs. Corey helps break down the Atlantic Division matchups between the Charlotte Checkers / Bridgeport Islanders and the Springfield Thunderbirds / Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. How did the teams get there? What are the keys to the series, and finally, which team will advance to the Division Finals?

Deana and Andrew run down all of the remaining matchups in the North, Central, and Pacific Divisions. Which teams surprised the duo with first-round victories? What unlikely players are stepping up? Also, which key skaters have disappeared, putting their team at risk of an early departure? They go over that and more.

The Holy GrAHL, Field Pass Hockey’s flagship American Hockey League Podcast. Each week, we look into the biggest stories out of the AHL, its players, and their teams.
